History
Jacqueline is the daughter of Quinn (rider to gold Myareth) and X'lasar (rider to bronze Tsorath), born at Benden Weyr before being turned over to nannies for a good portion of her life. That is, she was in the care of nannies for the period of time before the entire family went back -when- with a good number of other riders/weyrfolk/crafters.
Once back -when-, Eli experienced her first Hatching at seven Turns, a clutch in the jungle that resulted in numerous Fortian Impressees including T'jano and Taini (amongst many others!), dictating everything to the parents that she'd never really seen as often as she did once they were back -when-. Time passed, Jacqueline acquired many siblings (Quinn's a prolific baby-machine) and then the group came forward and settled back into Ista Weyr.
Now, the relationship between her mother and father was quite strained up until recently, so Jacqueline often tried her best to help out Quinn wherever she could, taking Nataquin (the jerk) down to the beach and pampering her other siblings. Once that tension was over, Jacqueline began to make friends with the other teenagers close to her age (since she was thirteen at the time) and met Rhikiad. Ever since the first time she really met him, she's had a crush on him due to the fact that he was the only boy more than willing to help her string flowers together.
All that follows is relatively simple: Jacqueline was scared to death numerous times by Q'luin, played dice with Emilia and was also defended by her, and then asked to Stand by Q'luin as a way to get back at her mother. Since that night, Eli's been holed up in the barracks with the rest of the candidates, waiting until the eggs hatch, and hoping to follow in her parents' footsteps. She's also bonded quite nicely with the other candidates: she's closest to Tiarla, Rhikiad, and seems to have taken a keen liking to Marjani, despite the other's grumpy nature.
Not to mention, the girl has acquired THREE firelizards, much to the distaste of her father. It seems that she picks up the things just to torture him, regardless of the fact that she really wants to make him super happy.
Personality
Jacqueline is the bubbly girl that's nosy, all over the place, and generally in a bright and cheery mood. However, sometimes her mood can turn sullen, quiet, though all it takes to break her out of her funk is a compliment or a stimulating activity. There's only one real person that she can't quite figure out and doesn't like. Unsurprisingly, this person is Q'luin. She's frightened of the man because of his various approaches and ways of harassment and she tends to try and avoid him. She just wants to be friends with nearly everyone and a good part of who she is is wrapped around her parents: she doesn't want to disappoint them and she wants to make them proud of her.
Personality
Mika is very much
History
Mika is a native of Ista Weyr. She was born to a pair of lower cavern workers. Her father, Bykali, has risen to a respectable rank amongst the lower caverns folk, in that he is frequently placed in charge of larger repair projects about the weyr. Like wise her mother, Milara, is in charge of one of the groups of the regular menders down in the lower caverns. Both are very sensitive to rank and station, though not quite so much as Mika has become. Mika's brother, Bylaran, who is older by 3 turns, was always a firebrand, driving his parents to distraction with one escapade after another.
He was very fond of his shy little sister and managed to keep her out of the worst of his own trouble. He also went out of his way to shield her from the nastier minded of the weyr bullies, a protection that evaporated when he apprenticed to the Harper Hall at 11. The 8 year old Mika , only knew that she’d been abandoned by her only protector. Her parents, always worried when her brother landed her in trouble, were determined she would not turn out so disruptive. They redoubled their efforts in impressing proper behavior upon their youngest.
Her father was always the more laid back of the pair, but Mika’s mother was quick to jump on the slightest hint of rebellion or perceived discourtesy, not realizing that her daughter was cut from an entirely different cloth than her son. Mika did her best and retreated into a shell of absolute obedience and submission, which wasn’t helped at all by the fact she was still a target to the rougher elements of the lower caverns workers, who saw her as an easy target whenever they wanted to get out of something.
She managed to get away every now and then, though she didn’t see it like that. The Ista Hold wher handlers had asked for help at one point and she was sent. She found she actually enjoyed working with the animals. One of the old Aunties in the lower caverns made floral waters for and would tolerate the quiet girl, largely because Mika would actually listen to her ramble about the properties of this and that and speak wistfully of the stronger essences some of the traders bring back.
When she was 14, Kabrielle’s gold rose for the first time in 4 turns (after turns of recovery from a serious illness,) and Mika was searched for the clutch. She made a few friends, most notably one Ryskim who went on to impress a brown and became R’ki. The two grew close, though a few others she was less certain of, most notably Qiluin who became Q’luin after impressing bronze. She is still rather frightened of him, though it’s mellowed to wariness in the turns since the hatching.
She was one of a collection of candidates who stayed after failing to impress. Then Kabrielle died while Corana’s Naomith was still a weyrling and another long wait ensued. Most of the candidates drifted away, one by one, to other things. Mika’s life was little different than when she was growing up, still an endless repetition of chores.
She managed to find a firelizard clutch and on the advice of one of the old uncles, and in a rare spat of independence, she decided to sell them. The profit she turned from the 15 eggs was considerable, including some of the very oils that the old aunty had been wishing for. Unfortunately this drew the attention of one of the nastier branches of the lower caverns bullies (where there are people there will be bullies.) She took to hiding both her profits and the eggs until they were sold.
Eventually Naomith rose, and again Mika stood, and failed to impress. This time, between clutches, she found herself working with the headwoman Kezia, at first simply to keep the woman, one of her few friends, from overworking herself quite so badly, then because she came to enjoy it and to enjoy being useful. As time passed, others came and began to help as well. Asher, the weyrharper, discovered how much the Headwoman was overworking herself, and arranged for the Hall to send a few of their apprentice scribes to help at least with the basic record maintenance.
Clutches came and went and turns passed. Gold riders also came and went, and Mika alternated between candidate chores and the Headwoman's office. When Kezia also left, one of the assistants, a brassy woman named Blanche, stepped into the position, and, while never formally appointed, no one has yet challenged her right to give orders. Mika, for her part, has seen no reason to, though working under the pushy woman has had an unforseen effect, in that Mika learned how to push back, rarely with great force, but the circumstances have added a little spine to the timid little mouse that first stood seven turns earlier.
Tia was raised as part of a large family trading caravan, which included Tig's family. As he's already alluded to, there was at one point an ambush that took the lives of nearly all of the family. Tiarla's parents escaped with her in tow, believing there were no other survivors. Moving to the Fort Area they began a new life maintaining a Runner station for the long distance runners that run 'traces' to deliver messages between Holds. Tia was one of those messengers when she sustained an injury during a Run and then moved to the Weyr to recover and start fresh once again.
Of course, within the span of a Turn, she now has two children courtesy of Q'luin, has discovered that she's a cousin of some degree to Santiago (yay family!), and become rather protective of Rhikiad. Obviously, a lot of changes :)
Eggies!!!
Spilt Milk Egg - I just love the whole black and white thing, plus… there's a wager running on what color dragonet hatches from a black egg on the sands.
Erupting Molten Egg - Totally reminds me of Tia's temper. Haha! No really, volcano's are awe-inspiring and dangerous and I'm always entranced by them.
Yosemite Egg- The irony of a motorhome barreling through an otherwise -perfect- scene just really tickles me. Those are the kind of moments you never, ever forget. Love it.
Too Late to Change Egg - Aside from the fact that I love the colors and imagery, I kind of like the hint of danger that lurks there. Yeah, I'm a freak. Whatever!
Aadi, snookins, what do you want to share?
(Thanks to Caro for the photo edits!)
More to come when I dig out her files!
Tiago was raised in a large family of traders consisting of several families all related to one another one way or another. Amongst them included Tiarla's family. When he was about ten turns old, the caravan was ambushed and essentially massacred. Tig (or Santi as he was called back then.) was seriously injured and left for dead. He was recovered hours later by the next group of travelers on the road who informed him that he was the only survivor. (See Tiarla's history if she writes one for her family's escape.) Little of this story is known publically as Tiago does not like to speak of it. However OOCly the rp history is laid out in logs available on LJ.
Tiago healed and threw himself into whatever work he could find, joining and training amongst the guards of Nerat Hold for a time before hiring out as a freesword and fighter escort with other caravan groups that crossed the northern continent. This eventually brought him to Fort Hold and a fateful run in with several people there. He was offered several opportunities but wanting a change of pace, he elected to go to Ista Weyr and hire on as a Weyrguard.
Then came the fixation with perty redheads. Uh, I mean that's where he met Rhikiad and consequently fostered a relationship bordering between mentor and companion. Ahem. This is a situation that is ever evolving and growing, mostly because Tiago has no idea from one minute to another what Rhikiad would do next!
Enough history. ;)
Eggs:
To Catch A Frog Egg - Spent many childhood summers playing in creeks, catching tadpoles, fish, and running away from snakes. Harkens back to some of those carefree days that brings a touch of nostalgia that appeals to me and to the character as well.
Lightning Strikes The Lone Tree Egg - I've been known to stand outside to watch lightning storms. Which was a bad idea when one is holding a marching band saxophone around their neck. ;) I've seen incredible strikes over the years, one of which landed not 100 feet away when it hit a transformer box next to the road. The description is quite 'striking' as well.
Spilt Milk Egg - I like this one purely for the image, I love the way the white dribbles along the sides in such a distinct contrast to the dark surface under it. Plus Q'luin, Tiarla, and I have a bet on a 'black' egg and this one could possibly fit the bill. ;)
Zaeri, Zaeri! Quite contrary, how will this page grow?
Sharynaaa! What is it that you wanted to say?
Carolyna, does your character have a hockey addiction too?
(Thanks to Marjani for the third picture, and kudos to http://www.silindor.com/index.html for the base)First for Caro's Family:
Mother: Bryn
Father: Ber
Siblings: Susyn, Caro's twin sister, is a Healer Journeyman; Jalyn, the oldest boy, is 2 turns younger than Caro and Su and is a Harper Journeyman; Taryn (F) and Tristyn (M) are twins, 3 turns younger than Caro, Taryn is a Weaver Journeyman, Tristyn is a Weaver Sr. Apprentice; Valyn is the youngest boy and is 5 turns younger than Caro, he's a Smith Sr. Apprentice. These are just the one's she knows of right now… there could be more.
Carolyna is your cute little tomboy of a girl who hails from Bitra, though she lacks a distinct Bitran streak to her. She's got a few siblings, though don't ask her how many, since she left the Hold for the Istan Smith Hall as soon as she could, intent to get out from under her parents thumb and the rule of her younger siblings, who's care she was charged with. Carolyna then proceeded to spend the next several turns apprenticing at the Smith Hall, eventually taking a liking to the fine art of jewellery, when she was promoted to journeyman. A few months after her promotion the smith was shipped out to Ista Weyr to sell her wares there, which she did for a good turn or two.
Of course, all good things must come to an end, or a beginning, depending on how one looks at it, for Carolyna was stolen from the crafters area of the Weyr, and delivered her right to the candidates barracks. The rest, as they say, is history.
Now, enough of WHO exactly, Carolyna is… time for eggs!
Spilt Milk Egg:
An attractive speckled stone-grey shell is submerged by the ivory blotches that splash broadly across this egg, stains and drops that puddle together towards the pointed end, dollops of cream and trickles of pearl and splatters of melting snow drizzled over again with milky swirls.
Moment of Totality Egg:
Exuding stillness, sleek and smooth and silent, this large egg appears to be the deepest shade of midnight, a rich shade of nothingness, and yet, viewed from any angle, clinging to the outer extremes of its wide girth is a halo of bright golden light that reverberates across the shell's surface, fringing into tinges of fuzzy tangerine that stand out against the darkness behind.
Lightning Strikes the Lone Tree Egg:
Mottled darkly in tones of stormy gray, this egg could be easily overlooked but for the eye-catching split down its center. Is it cracked, is that a flaw? The smooth shell plays host to no obvious imperfections, and yet that jagged streak of blazing, white-hot glory seems almost defiantly displayed, impossible to ignore and magnificent in its irregularity. Towards the rounded base of this surface, it kisses green and merges there; here, one can hardly untangle the upward flow of black limbs and leafy green flashes as it cradles and eventually devours the shaft of light. They consume one another, each in their own way taking the other's life, but for this single captured moment where they meet.
Beyond the Horizon Egg:
Out of inky black, watercolour blues and greys intermingle and blend together in a dark infusion which lightens out as they streak across the curves of this egg, washing out all other colour. Near the wide, rounded end curves a fine line of fiery red that is highlighted in blood orange and a hinted rainbow of wilted carnation blooms, all that remains.
Wrought Upon by Tempests Egg:
This one is stormy, captured by the spirit and essence of a violent element in action. This egg is larger in size, shell wrought with frantic beats of grays and browns, with a shot of yellow mixed with white strung through. But what's this? Down, near the lower edge of the shell, there's a lone spot of red, as though a brave soul weathering the storm.

Telgari born, Rhikiad is a holder boy. His youth (up until about a turn and a half ago) is pretty much well something that the teen would rather forget, and probably won't bring it up at all. In the twelve something years of playing Pern, I've never, ever made a character with a background that had quite a bit of angst in it. Rhik's does. Bastard born, used by a manipulative mother to try to get herself a man, and discarded when it didn't work out, Rhikiad became just another nursery brat but overshadowed with the stigma of a mother that could care less and was known for being a bit of a manipulative tramp. If you put that with the teen's case of ADD and a touch of innocent kleptomania, he was an easy target for a lot of abuse. There are stories here that might never see the light of day.
At about fourteen turns of age, one of the Hold's male blooded took an interest in the easily manipulated teen that wasn't at all innocent. When they were discovered, Rhikiad was discarded once again. To avoid any embarrassments, he was taken out of Telgar lands and told not to return. He doesn't plan to, ever.
And so began his life at Ista Weyr. After having taken up with a trading caravan, and then a ship, he eventually ended up at the Weyr on a whim and chance. Having had no experience and any real intensive education concerning dragons or Weyrs, it was a fascinating experience for the teen. Since coming to the Weyr he's rode on dragons, betweened, watched flights, been to a Fort gather, learned to read and write, listened to stories of hurt and heartache, swum in an ocean, got lost in a jungle, found the joy of baked spiderclaws, became the local canine keeper, was lusted after, impressed a couple of firelizards, gave people tattoos, tried to build a sandhold in the hatching caverns, managed to get the highest bid for his bod during an auction, fell in love, fell under a runner, tried to rescue people from pirates, got caught in a snowstorm (at Fort), became marooned, was loved in return, and is now a candidate.
And he is only 16 turns old.
Eggs:
Wrought upon by Tempests Egg is by far and away my favorite. It is completely by chance that I really picked this one. It happened during a RP where Rhik when and decided to touch an egg rather early on. This was the last egg in the lineup, so I simply picked it. When I got the egg emote, it all just seemed to work so well. And so, I really do like this one. For some reason now, Rhik can't seem to find this egg out on the sands, it keeps moving out of his vision but he's curious to find it again.
Sliding Doors Egg: Again, pure chance on this one. Nobody was paying any sort of attention at all to this one, so I picked it on random chance. I actually rather liked the egg emit that I got from it, and it had ideas to it that really piqued Rhikiad's interest.
Tell us about your character.
This page is for Meldari to edit as she wishes. :)
Image of Meldari
Brief Bio
Mel is a trader with the Enlander Clan, she was born and bred in their midst and there isn't much about it she isn't proud of. Having had a natural talent for being around and catching what is going on, it wasn't long before she came to the notice of the WagonMaster and got to running her errands, a sort of apprenticeship if you're not familiar with Traders. The first time Mel was plucked away from the Clan was for a clutch at Fort and while she didn't impress she did meet a diffident young man named Xanathos and the two have been all but joined at the hip since then.
There isn't much self-conscious about Mel, she's willing to talk about her life, trade for whatever anyone needs and generally just help out. The one exception to her general good nature is her unease with the Barlords, she's been just close enough to leadership of the Clan to hear about the worries and feel defensive toward her large extended family.
Description
Though none of Meldari's features draw much attention on their own, there is something about this girl that makes her generally pleasent and attractive to look at. Mahogany colored hair is swept back behind ears to allow her hazel eyes to blink free. A round face is defined by high cheekbones and accented by a pert nose and full lower lip. Her body is curvy overall, a woman's figure with a tapering at her waist which does not cause her to look slim but does add definition to her average height.
A kerchief of scarlet cotton: Over the stark black mountainous background highlighted in gold, a red sky contains a bright golden sun in the high noon position. It is the mark of the Enlander Family. Tacked to one shoulder the orange and black knot of Ista has the white thread of a candidate interwound.
Worn and patched clothing is big enough for someone nearly twice her size. The neck of the tunic has been pinned to stop it from sliding and looking indecent. Tunic and pants are cinched at the waist with a wide belt decorated with a few handy pouches. Thanner regards you, perched atop Meldari's shoulder.
Yo, Indiana, add whatever you wish!
Hailing from the Ista Hold Smith Hall, Marjani is 18 Turns of age.
Marjani was Searched during the infamous game of Truth or Dare that landed the Candidates with weekly checkups and daily training. Q'luin informed her that bronze Zhoreth had no taste, and that she had caught the dragon's eye earlier as she crossed the Bowl. Marjani was at Ista Weyr helping one of the other Smiths (NPC) with a project, likely construction.
Family
Father: Smith Journeyman Rijan Mother: Keroon Hold kitchen drudge, Mabesta.
Stepmother: former Vitner Journeywoman, Racqal
Half-siblings: Harper Apprentice Jarnil (M), three turns younger; Ista Hold kidlet Ricqa (F), seven turns younger.
Description
To call Marjani a delicate flower would be dishonest; it isn't that she is bulky or obese, but she has a certain physical presence that does not lend itself to the idea of feminine mystique or charm. Her jawline is best classified as sharp, and considering her short forehead and strong chin, one might describe the shape of her face as primarily square. With an incredibly short haircut, her thick black hair only adds to her severity. This is not tempered by her other features: angular eyebrows, heavy-lidded coppery-brown eyes, a wide nose, and full lips, all often set in a expression usually tempered with some amount of exasperation. This dark-skinned woman is often described as thin or athletic, though her ample chest and wide hips sometimes lead people to believe she is slightly chubby. Still, her muscles are well defined, telling of a kind of strength that her average height alone could not accomplish.
Although Marjani owns enough clothing to allow some amount of change and cleanliness, it is likely that Marjani is wearing a short sleeved tunic, usually either of a warm orange or forest green hue. She wears them long, belted at the waist and over comfortably worn and usually quite tight brown or black leggings. If it's cold, she may have a dingy long sleeved top under her tunic. She only owns one pair of shoes: a loose pair of tan boots that don't even begin to show signs of decoration, and are just high enough so that her pants can be tucked inside of them. She tends to forgo any decorative items at all, truth be told. |
Base Credit (made by Marjani) |
Personality
Marjani is a serious young woman with a respect for her place in society and therefore authority figures. Still, she has a sharp but not heated temper, and tends to be easily exasperated. Often, Marjani is more matter of fact than, say, sarcastic or coy, but she isn't sour by nature.
Rather, she looks at everything from a logical standpoint. "Is it wise to practice using these materials when we won't get another shipment until Spring?" "Considering that it's been a hot summer is it wise to commission a heavy dress for that Gather?" etc. She has a need to explain things and also to have them explained to her that stems from this logical nature, as well.
And although Marjani prefers the bending rather than breaking law of the land (mostly), she's not opposed to fun and in fact enjoys relaxing and even the occasional prank or misdeed. She just considers the consequences before doing so. This does not seem to apply to alcohol, and though she is by no means an alcoholic, she's managed to build up a tolerance in her lifetime. Unusual, considering she's was an apprentice before she had her first alcoholic drink.
In regards to human interaction, she plays it mostly by ear. There's not a desire for solitariness, but Marjani doesn't crave closeness the way others seem to. She can be affable and even friendly, but tends not to form long lasting alliances. Even her relationship with her family is warm but not deep. She's never had a relationship, though on occasion she has been pursued as many young women are. Her reaction in these situations is typically to shut down until the young man in question gets the picture that she isn't interested. The only crush she ever had was on a significantly older Master Smith, but it was never even voiced and it was short lived. Still, it probably contributed to her interest in construction and engineering within the Craft.
Basically, she is human and capable of love, friendship, etc, but she neither encourages or discourages deeper connections.
Player
Marjani's player is a college student at the end of her fifth (and by no means last) year; Her online times vary depending on work and social activities (oh yeah and classes!) and she should be around much more after June 6th, pending her summer work schedule. She tends to be around in the evenings and late nights EST and is probably open to RP if she's on. Feel free to ask, or if you have a specific scene in mind, to @mail her to set it up.
Like the pixel "doll" above? @read 24 on the candidate mailer to find out how to get Marjani to make one for you.
