A little history
Born to Ista Hold Local seacrafter and fishmonger Marc, Alistair has spent nearly his entire life on the open ocean. Sea legs firmly planted atop a deck for nearly 22 years, Alistair has found that life on land can be rougher than on even the most turbulent of seas. Raised from a young and only child to take over his father's business, the routine schedule of deap sea fishing for days on end followed by short periods of intense negotiation and bartering have hardened this young man's resolve to a tempering stronger than even steel. Now confident and swift in judgement, Alistair's father has finally entrusted him to a small fishing vessel of his own, a responsibility it has taken years of diligent work to gain command of.
Fate, however, has a real twisted sense of humor. Just as he was finally beginning to gain the respect of the other seacrafters, snow fell, trapping him and stranding his boat at the weyr - on his first solo trip nonetheless! His attempts to remain relatively low profile were in vein, as a snowball fight roused the candidate class into all out war against a few of the local riders. After the fight was over, however, Alistair found himself alone with Rh'iad and S'tao, along with bronze dragon Sephiroth. One giant dragon lick later, he found himself the newest addition to the candidate class, a position that has the potential to throw a seious kink into his future fishing plans.
Candidate Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Alistair grew up on the open ocean of Ista Hold, with his father, Marc, toting him around everywhere. His mother had passed away during childbirth, and he was an only son, which put him as the sole heir to the family business of fishmongering. This means that he is very familiar with the fishing business, but fairly disconnected from the rest of the world, and might result in him coming off as a little naive from time to time.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Alistair is really only close to his father. He spends nearly all of his time fishing and learning from Marc. His fellow crafters are acquaintances, but not much more than that - well except for one man. Alistair was very familiar with a good friend of his father's, and Hold Lord Sterling's brother, Alister. Alistair's father and Alister were such close friends that Marc's first born son (and only) was named after Alister. It was through Alister and the small time on land that he spent near the man and closer to the Lord that Alistair has picked up a more refined vocabulary than his loose tongued father.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I personally like his disconnect to the world outside of fishing. I like being limited by his knowledge of the workings of daily life that don't involve waxing a deck or descaling the days catch. The akwardness it creates is, in my opinion, fun and challenging. That is not to say that Alistair is not adverse to learning how to live on land, just that he might have some questions that seem that would seem strange and nonsensical.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
The apparent stoicism that comes from years and years of hard work on the sea is something that Alistair needs to work on. He will come off a little rough, and will seem to refuse to acknowledge certain things. However, it is the tough facade this young man has had to learn to wear in order to survive for his hard 22 years. Perhaps others could help get him to lighten up a little. He's a tough bugger, but he's also very empathetic and is good at hiding it. You'll just have to figure out how to tap into this…
Hello all! Just wanted to say and that I’m ecstatic to get the chance to stand with you guys. I have high hopes for this candidacy, along the lines of bonding oocly and icly with my fellow elite ‘drudges’. I just wanted to put up a few words about Baiden to introduce him to everyone oocly, as well as explain some of what your character will see icly during his stay.
The simplest way to describe Baiden is that he’s duty bound. His ideas are old fashioned, and he holds to tradition far more then most. He’s very quietly but passionately spoken, and very little gets him riled up. He reacts to most situations (not involving spiderclaws) in a calm, collected, and straight-forward way. It may be a disappointment to some, but he has almost no sense of humour and certainly isn’t going to participate in pranks or troublemaking, and if he feels it’s serious, he’s going to tell those in charge. He views life as a struggle, one where discipline and strength of character are needed to survive. Parties are not his thing. Drinking is not his thing. He’ll occasionally kick back and relax a little, but this is mostly done when he is alone. He’ll view candidacy as a training period, a preparation for battle, because in a way that is what it is (to him). Thread is very serious business, and he will not view those who goof around or act silly, or avoid their chores, or slack off, as worthy of impressing. Who would want a joker and slob watching their back in a life-and-death situation? Feel free to comment about how uptight he is. Just a note though, this is purely IC. OOCly I have to work hard at keeping that stick up his rear because I’m a relaxed, carefree, playful person. His opinions on everything/everyone are not necessarily mine. :)
Fun facts: His holder traditionalism means that he frequently stomps down or rips out patches of green when he sees them, if such is feasible. Plantlife near human populations is viewed as a major no-no. Likewise, he’s still very uneasy with a Weyr’s free-wheeling style of relationships and sexual activities. He believes women should be appropriately clothed and monogamous, and men restrained and respectful around the ladies. He’s very conservative.
He carries a sword. It’s old, a note of pride, and he knows how to use it. He normally has one or two other weapons on him, though since they’re concealed, it’s hard to know where and what.
He loathes firelizards, seeing them as pests. Someone with one is fine, he can ignore that, but more then that is just an annoyance. He’ll frequently be seen shooing them away from himself or objects near him (such as during dinner time).
He’s usually quite softly spoken, vary rarely raising his voice in any manner except sternness or annoyance. It makes him a bit hard to hear sometimes, but as he doesn’t like speaking much, its a habit he’s developed since youth.
He comes from a small hold near Bitra, and so has something like an accent from there, but its not thick or even easily recognizable.
Candidate questions to follow:
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
I’ll write a brief history here, but the main (and better written) one can be found on the Ista Weyr homepage, under pcs and Baiden. Baiden was born in a small hold somewhat near Bitra Hold herself. His father was (and is still) a very strict man, very old fashioned and basically taught Baiden to follow in his footsteps. He knows a great deal about hold maintenance, as far as farming the land, maintaining order, hunting, and defense goes. Stewardship, the whole nine yards. He learned a lot from his mother as well, from first aid, to preparing food, to mending clothes. Rather then growing up as a normal child with friends, he grew up in nearly a constant state of training and discipline, with his feet well-seated in traditionalism. He’s an only child (much to his father’s annoyance and his mother’s sadness, considering the need for birthing a future generation to take care of the hold). He does, however, have a slew of cousins, aunties, uncles, and those wed into the family. With his mother’s recent passing, Baiden set out on his own. Not permanently, but rather to form contacts and forge a greater understanding with the world outside his little hold. Eventually, he landed in Ista Weyr, and has taken up a likely temporary position as guard (and now candidate), until his father calls him home to take over holdership.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Baiden hasn’t been at Ista Weyr for very long, so he hasn’t gotten close to..well, anyone. As sad as that may sound, he is reclusive, and while he’s not unfriendly, he doesn’t go out of his way to make friendships. With him, it’s just something that needs time to develop. Once he’s comfortable with his surroundings, he’ll be more open to those around him.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Baiden, as stuffy as he may seem, is one of my more unique characters. I’ve actually played him for many years now, in another element all together, and this is a recreation of him in a Pernese environment, so I already love him dearly. He’s calm, cool, collected, and disciplined for the most part, and I’d like to keep this aspect. He seems much older then his years, and it’s no act. He hasn’t had a chance to expand past his father’s ‘programming’, so to speak, and he’s got a long way to go before he can understand the world around him. He’d dedicated, diligent, and lawful.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
Really, I think changes in my character will happen over time. There’s a bit of a transitional period. Being new to the area, and certainly the situation, he’s going to cling to the ways he knows best until he adjusts and lets his guard down a bit. He’s never going to be playful or hyper or energetic seeming, but he -will- make a good friend just.. as soon as he makes some in return. :)
Cordelia
Spinneret-fine strands of amber-rich blonde twist and glide around each other, silken kinks of loose ringlets descending past shoulders to mid-back. Framed in loose curling layers of honey golden locks is an oval face, delicately featured with high, slanted cheekbones and full, cupids bow mouth. Jade green almond-shaped eyes are fringed in thick, dark lashes and simmer with latent sensuality, oft twinkling with mirth to reflect an easy smile. Limbs are long and lean, forming a lithe frame of relatively tall height that moves with easy grace and purpose.
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Cordelia is actually one of those rare people that grew up at Igen Weyr. She was raised as most Weyrbrats are by the nannies, and if asked, she can easily rattle off the names of her parents. Being the daughter of a greenrider and a messenger, however, isn't really lineage that she'd call prestigious, so she's just as happy to say she was raised by the Weyr's nannies. She is by no means ashamed of her parents, but she never really considered herself to be a product of unusual circumstance.
Her childhood was pretty normal, all things considered. She was an impish child with those blonde curls that people fawn over (everyone except the person who has to untangle them at the end of the day, mind you) and one of those smiles that could earn her treats from the cooks.
An interesting note… As a child, Cordelia was favored by the cook, who at the time was a woman named Hinda. Cordi became such a common sight in the kitchens that as she grew older, she eventually became a kitchen helper. Hinda ended up the victim of a weird accident in the storage caverns, and thus the current cook was put in place. Cordelia was fifteen when Hinda passed away, and for some strange reason, she and the current cook never really got along. This is pretty much the root of Cordelia's distaste for the current cook.
As far as Cordi knows, she doesn't have any full brothers or sisters. She did however grow close to several other children growing up, and as far as she was concerned, they were family enough.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
OOCly, Cordelia hasn't really been around long enough to grow close to anyone, although she does have a particular fondness for chasing Q'luin around and pestering the snot out of him. This is most likely due to the fact that he pays attention to her, a luxury she didn't have much of growing up in a crowd of other children. It's quite the similar situation with Delia, actually, although it's more a fascination at just how strange of a conversation she can have with the Healer.
ICly, Cordi had a few other kitchen helpers she was relatively close to, more because they suffered with her (in her mind, it was totally suffering) than anything. You know how most people either have a few really close friends or a lot of not-so-close friends? Cordi's in the middle. She's not quite the people magnet, but she's not antisocial either.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Admittedly, Cordelia has been wicked fun. She has a certain "joie du vivre" to her, a certain passion with which she enjoys life. She's a flirt and a bit of a spaz at times, although I see this mellowing out as she grows older. She doesn't quite have the whole diva thing going on, but she definitely realizes that she is indeed a female and therefore has a certain power over the male species.
Plus, you know, living in Ista makes it normal to practically live in a bikini more often than not, so there is the whole enjoying the way people tend to look at a female in a skimpy bathing suit. I mean, c'mon, she IS female. Who doesn't appreciate being eyed every now and then? ;)
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
Her impatience at wanting to grow up so fast! This goes back to myself as a player looking back at when /I/ was 19 and thinking about all of the things I would have done differently then. Cordelia's desire to be older stems from expecting people to take her more seriously if she was older, and quite frankly, she'll grow up in due time. In the meantime, 19 doesn't last forever, and Cordelia will have to learn to enjoy it while she can.
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
There's nothing fantastical or overly dramatic in Daycen's background. He really would have grown up amongst the Smith's and other Starcrafters since they're inter-related crafts, and he was tapped at an early age as someone who grasped the concepts needed to do the kind of charting and pattern recognition that a low-tech society would need in someone studying the sky. So, honestly, it's all kind of boring and nerdy :) A childhood spent learning constellations and how to plot changes in the stars positions, and how to read charts and star maps and all that kind of geekery. Lots of time spent indoors during the day doing the pen/paper type of work, and then lots of time spent outdoors at night doing the actual observing and measuring. He's obviously kind of a night owl because of that.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Given that those in his profession are having to prove that they aren't a bunch of morons and that it really isn't their fault that the threadfall charts are off… like many other Starcrafters, Daycen keeps his head low right now! So he really isn't close to much of anyone, though he considers Klohi a friend, and there are a couple others that are acquaintances. Until Minalth demanded he stand for the next clutch nearly all of his time has been spent working, anyway. (*shakes fist at S'tao!*). He also thinks Zerra is all kinds of cool since she is brave enough to try and teach him to surf.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I have to admit that I love the fact that Daycen is a total nerdgeek. He's not a stuffy, rules oriented one or anything. But he's socially awkward in a kind of cute way (unless you're a weyrleader, apparently), and he's way more into brainy things like, well, tactics and plotting and drawing diagrams or charts. I'm not entirely sure how to build on that. Eeeeeeeeevil prank mastermind, perhaps? He also has THE worst luck. Seriously. He must have really pissed people off in a past life. Posted at Ista after their Hold's gather grounds, crops, vineyard and supply ship are decimated by thread and he has to figure out why they didn't have the right information on when thread would fall next. And then he finds himself with a Jekyll/Hyde blue firelizard that's slightly evil, and a fugly devourer of souls blue firelizard. I don't mind playing on that bad luck at all; maybe he gets blamed for some pranks that none of the PC candidates have comitted (or even some that we plot ourselves), gets assigned the worst chores on top of being Minalth's slave (Hi Zerra!), gets caught drunk because someone spiked his drink and he didn't even know it. You know, that sort of thing. Anything to provide us some hilarity. In short: Nerdy + Bad Luck=Daycen.
It's really also no wonder he's not a hit with the ladies when he has a booger-shaped soul devouring creature always on his shoulder :)
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I'd like him to be a little more laid back. Right now he's still totally uptight and nervous about being stationed at the Weyr. Some mild ribbing, camraderie, and interaction with the other candidates will probably help with that though. I'm completely open to any kind of character development, save for the nerdy part. He'll always be a nerd :)
All things Jarran!
History
Prior to arriving at Ista, Jordan spent the earlier part of her childhood at Southern Hold, remaining there until her parents, both Journeymen Harpers, left the craft. Failing to be promoted, and unable to reconcile his differences with the Masters, Jordan's father decided a life in the craft was not for him. Her mother followed suit, and together the entire family moved to one of the smaller cotholds within Southerns territory.
After an accident claimed the lives of their parents, Jordan and her brother were uniformly adopted by an older couple within the cothold. Jordan was eight, and her brother was thirteen, far too young to lose such important people in their lives. Their loss served only to strengthen their bond. The pair were taught many things by the couple, such as what was necessary to survive away from the protection of the Hold. It was a hard life, but not an unpleasant one and Jordan has nothing but fond memories of her time at Southern. Indeed its left her with much to be thankful for.
Candidate Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Without flinching or faltering, Jordan will stick to the story above as being the honest and genuine 'where I'm from' story everyone gets asked at some point. But the truth is a bit more complex, and definitely not known to just anyone.
Jordan was born in Southern and was raised by her parents up until their death. She and her older brother were essentially adopted by another couple, though it was primarily her brother who raised her. Her childhood was normal - by the standards of the group she was raised in. Which is to say that she didn't spend her time playing games or doing menial tasks so much as learning why the world was so frakked up and what all needed to be done to un-frakk it. She also learned how to be what was needed by those that raised her. It lead her to become quite the forceful personality, one with a narrow, jaded view of outsiders and an over inflated sense of self and self-purpose.
She was a star in a world that was shaped and guided by rules. Despite its drawbacks, her upbringing afforded her the means by which to become a strong, self sufficient person. Albeit one that operated within that rigid structure, accustomed to following ideas set before her and a very much dog-eat-dog hierarchy based on skill, ruthlessness and usefulness. She was a fighter, a thief, a topnotch manipulator. Jordan felt leagues above the people she and her adoptive family preyed upon, and rarely felt remorse for those they took advantage of and on occasion, hurt.
There were raids on minor holds, on well-to-do travelers between said holds or simply caught unawares, there were plots and ploys designed to give Jordan's adoptive family leverage over people of means and wealth and then there were brazen robberies of soft targets - places that were far too easy to get into and out of, that were begging to be robbed.
Wonder of wonders, it took visiting Ista and meeting its myriad of characters to bring things into perspective. Living the life she scorned and laughed at afforded her the opportunity to see that it wasn't as flawed as she'd originally been lead to believe, nor was it anything less than what she'd lived previously. Through experiences that followed, she gained a deeper appreciation for the right way of doing things and at cost, she even came to understand that there was no honor among thieves. Better still, that she really, truly wasn't all that she thought she was.
She no longer saw herself and the people she'd proudly called family as harbingers of a new and better way of living, but as what they truly were. Glorified thieves and terrorists operating under the greed of a man who wished only to serve his own personal agenda.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
That depends on your definition of close. If, for instance, you mean close-as-kin then that'd extend to a sum total of two people. Cameron, her brother and Ai'den, her weyrmate.
If you mean people she finds "amusing and fun to be around" then that'd be a bit broader and would encompass a handful of people (in no particular order): D'yce, I'es, T'syn, Qil, I'deni and Thevaryn.
Then there are people she isn't sure of, but feels they have something to offer. Jordan just has no idea what that is or how she'll even begin to approach forming something more than a casual interaction with. It's a much smaller group because Jordan tends not to venture far out of her comfort zone: Wyn, Klohi
So obviously, Jordan is fairly exclusive in who she forms relationships with. She still has high standards in what she looks for in people, and tends not to have a lot of patience for the 'types' of people she feel have nothing worthwhile to offer her or the world in general. It has to be said that while she's quick to judge, she's equally humble in admitting when she's been wrong in stereotyping someone (just probably not so much to that person's face).
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I like everything. As boastful as that sounds, she is truly one of my most favorite characters. I love her confidence and her straightforwardness, I love that she doesn't feel the need to be anything other than what she is and that she rarely feels the need to try and impress people. It's their job to impress her and she constantly measures and tests people. It's second nature to her and while it definitely doesn't win her many friends, it serves her well because it's how she decides who she surrounds herself with and the quality therein tends to be relatively high.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I think if there were one fault I would pinpoint and say, for sure, that /that/ is what makes Jordan not so great is that she's not the most approachable person. While it works for the character (who doesn't really want people poking around her business, let alone annoying her) it doesn't work so well for the RP scene. It's been a long, ongoing effort, one I know I haven't been entirely successful in but I am earnest in it and do truly want to make a character that is still true to her intent yet still approachable by a myriad of people. I guess having patience and understanding and a willingness of people to communicate with me and tell me what's working and what's not working would definitely help.
Misc
Despite his short stature, standing only 5’7’’, this young man’s build is sturdy and strong. A solid barrel chest melds seamlessly with wide, powerful shoulders. Arms and legs are well muscled from a lifetime of hard work. A wide stance and slight swagger exude an arrogance and aloofness not found in his face. Olive-toned skin, bronzed by the sun, is highlighted by closely cropped dark chestnut hair. The beginnings of worry and smile lines can be seen forming on his forehead. Dark green, almond shaped eyes glitter mischievously, laugh lines beginning to form at the corners. On a prominent, slightly crooked nose, and high cheek bones there is a light dusting of freckles. Full lips turn up in a one-sided smirk, never seeming to pull both corners of the mouth up into a full smile. He has a scruffy goatee that he rarely trims and the rest of his facial hair is usually scruffy and overgrown as well.
Kelethin is wearing a short sleeved, soft, linen tunic in a cream color, belted at his hips with a simple, brown, braided leather cord. He’s wearing long pants made of a heavy duty cloth in a dark brown with plenty of pockets. Heavy duty boots, calf high, are made of dark brown leather. His clothing is simple with no adornment. A carved wooden dragon hangs from a leather thong at his neck. A simple white knot hangs at Kelethin’s shoulder, indicating his rank as a candidate.
Candidate Questions:
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Kelethin was born on the plains of Keroon to a family of herders. As a child, he spend much of his time among bovines; helping to feed, herd, cull, and care for his family’s herd until a devastating disease wiped out many of his family’s animals when he was 14. Because he loved working with the bovines, Kelethin left his family soon after the destruction of the herd and apprenticed at the Beastcraft. There, he learned how to read, write, and keep records. Under careful direction of the masters, he began working on ways to improve breeding stock. Though he is most comfortable with bovines, he is also familiar and can work with runners, porcines, ovines, and wherries. Now, after six years of hard work, he is almost ready to walking the tables. He has been posted to Ista Weyr, under the close watch of an experienced journeyman, to get some real world experience.
Kelethin was always a daredevil. At home, he frequently pitted himself against the other herders in feats of athletic strength and daring. He rode bulls for fun at home and at the crafthall, broke runners, and became proficient in a variety of roping and riding tricks. He was always fearless in his herding skills, not afraid to face even the toughest animal. About the only thing that terrifies him is Between. He has only ridden a dragon once, and the experience of Between left him severely shaken.
While at the weyr, Kelethin started to try and improve the herd, which proved difficult as the breeding stock was in constant danger of being eaten. It didn’t take him too long to adjust to his new home. He started making friends with some of the candidates at the weyr, encouraging them to try dangerous things, like bull riding. Eventually, he was searched by the Weyrwoman herself. And thus we come to the present :D
Kelethin has three brothers. His oldest brother, L’rein, impressed a brown at High Reaches Weyr when Kelethin was only eight. He never developed a very close relationship with L’rein, mainly because L’rein was a bully when he was younger. Kelethin hasn’t seen his brother since his impression. His other brothers are younger than him. Kilein is two years younger than Kelethin and currently apprenticed with the Healers. Kilein and Kelethin were very close while they were growing up; partners in crime. They haven’t seen much of each other since Kelethin left home. Larin is four years younger than Kelethin and is living with their parents, helping them rebuild their herd and livelihood. Kelethin was somewhat close to his little brother and always tried to look out for him. All four boys share the same skin tone and eye color, and all but Larin have the same strong, stocky body. Larin is tall and slender with jet black hair. Kelethin hasn’t been home since he left for the crafthall and he is not a good letter writer. He also has a slew of cousins, uncles, and aunts. Every year while he was home, his family would get together and play games, race, eat, and catch up. Since he only saw much of his extended family once per year, he doesn’t know them very well.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Kelethin doesn’t know people in the weyr really well yet. He was very close to his family while he was at home, and misses them though he won’t admit it to anyone. He is extremely close to many of the stablehands at the weyr , especially since some of them came from Keroon. He is polite and respectful to those who outrank him, especially the Weyrwoman; that icy stare is scary. Tryslan’s adrenalin seeking attitude is admired, especially since the candidate and then beastcrafter shared the experience of bull riding. Kelethin is pretty easy to get along with, but he has a hard time letting people really get to know him.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I really like the daredevil aspect of Kelethin. I’ve never had a character quite like him before; usually my characters are more timid and less likely to do dangerous stuff. I hope that during candidacy, there will be options of doing some quasi-dangerous things; the search and rescue TP sounds right up his alley. I can also see Kelethin doing things like cliff diving, if there are places for cliff diving around Ista. I’ll just have to see what the next few weeks bring.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
There are a couple things I would like to change. Kelethin is too perfect; I’d like to work on developing some character flaws. I think I can work on this by just getting out and RPing in lots of different situations. ICly, I’d like for Kelethin to discover a world beyond beasts. Right now, that’s all he knows. He might seem worldly, having spent six years in a crafthall, but he actually lives in a beast centered universe! He needs people to show him that there are other things in the world than delivering, castrating, and herding beasts!
Never win first place.
Just bridging the gap towards adulthood, she stands at an 'impressive' 5'0''. Her face is heart shaped and plumped with baby fat she might never shed. Spiral curls fall to form some semblance of bangs, rebelliously hanging free from the tight twine she uses to fasten the rest of her hair. Two kink-filled and impossibly curly black balls of said hair rest at the back of her skull. Her complexion is far darker than most, resembling bark, or perhaps klah. Dull amber eyes look on somewhat vacantly, yet her cheeks are pulled back in an ever present grin. Along the wall of off-white jaws on display, there's a single black gap where her left canine should be; adding to the impish charm she carries. Her form hints at a slothful nature, lacking in much definition but with excess weight clinging to her still growing body.
1.) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Klohi was spawned at Ista Hold, and Ista itself is the only home she's ever known. (Including the Weyr). Her mother was a pretty woman who fell in love with a widower fisherman who already had three sons by his first wife. Klo became the fourth child in their family. Her mother, not quite recovering from a somewhat difficult birth, died when her daughter was only two turns old. It was up to her father to raise young Klo… a task he admitted to knowing nothing about, and he had no sisters to call upon to help him.
Her father was a hard worker, and didn't believe in anyone slacking off in their family. As soon as Klohi was able to walk, she was helping out around the house. Tool-fetching turned into fish gutting, which then grew into cooking and cleaning for the menfolk in their cozy home. Rather than embrace her upbringing, Klohi rebelled as most young people do, attempting to shirk her duties in order to do what /she/ wanted. It didn't work out so well.
Despite her best efforts, rebellion didn't come easy to the young girl. Her father also made sure to keep her extra busy, fearing that if Klohi didn't have enough to do she'd get tangled up in… boys. Yes, the man was what most would call “overprotective”. If that wasn't bad enough, he employed his sons as big, strapping guardians for their little half-sister. To say that Klohi had been sheltered is a an understatement. Until, of course, she was Searched the first time and whisked away to Ista Weyr. Left standing and choosing to stay, weyrlife was a huge adjustment for her, and still is.
Now she's a Candidate again.
I don't support the team.
2.) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Klohi has seen plenty of faces, and even talked to a few folks at Ista Weyr. You can't throw a pastry in the shardin' place without hitting at least one. But when it comes to genuine friends, it's more like Klohi's good at… making acquaintances. Even people not from Ista! There are exceptions, of course.
Wyn: Villainess turned Heroine. Ista Weyr's own moving glacier seemed to go out of her way to make things difficult for Klohi. That's how she saw it, anyway. But with contempt breeds familiarity (in this case), and through scented oils and proddy riders, a bond has been formed. There's still some tension, spawned from the girl's own upbringing and her fear of disappointing the Weyrwoman. Just a smidgen of teenage jealousy, too. But it's obvious that Klohi is thoroughly attached to the Queenrider.
Q'luin: What is there to say about this Bronzerider that hasn't already been gossiped about? Though Klohi doesn't /quite/ understand what exactly he's notorious for. It has to do with smooching so many ladies, and why he has a ton of kids, she's sure. She doesn't quite understand him, but he hasn't done anything for her to really dislike him. He's a pleasant acquaintance… most o the time.
Rh'iad: Oh Faranth, if Klohi could marry his hair, she would. She's only really talked with him once or twice, but the words exchanged were enough to make her like this greenrider. He's different from the rest of the adults, and she feels she's able to be completely honest with him (even if feelings get hurt in the process. Oops!). He doesn't try to boss her around, and she thinks he's super sweet. He also likes her baking!
S'tao: The Weyrleader. He can yell really loud when he wants to… and he also likes parties. Because those're the only times she really gets a glimpse of this very busy man. She also know he's always around Rh'iad 'cause of them being weyrmates and all. For someone in charge, he's not too bad- but since he's someone in charge, Klohi tries not to bring too much attention to herself around him. Mixed results.
Niles: One of the few people she actually talked to after being left standing on the sands. Talked to, rather than whine. He reminds her a lot of her father… which isn't necessarily a good thing. She tries to run errands for him, sometimes. Depending on how the man asks, she either snaps at him or is more than happy to do the Trader a favor. Even if she's snippy, he's a good man in her book. Just bossy. (Not really). And now he's a fellow Candidate. His reign of bossy terror is over!
Lisyana: Sweet. This girl has been nothing but pleasant to Klohi, and that kindness isn't overlooked. Then again, it's hard to think of anyone who dislikes her. Despite the good vibes, Klo doesn't know her that well. But she's pretty! Klohi likes pretty things! Er, even if those things happen to be people. Lisy's beauty also cause a mix of awe and slight self-consciousness, but that doesn't get in the way of their interaction. It just means Klohi /really/ likes to stare at Lisy's hair.
Delia: This one's a bit off. Nice, but… Klohi's quite sure she doesn't even need a dragon to have her head in the clouds. Delia seems to be even more scatterbrained than Klo, and that's just not normal! She's good at what she does, being a Healer, and it's an admirable profession. No negative feelings what so ever between these two, even if Delia's words are sometimes met with blank/confused stares. Doot i doot… ;)
Daycen: The first (and only) Starcrafter she's ever met. Well, journeyman Starcrafter. But that's still something! So far he seems really quiet, which instantly means Klohi /has/ to try and get him talk. She also kind of feels responsible for scolding him into impressing his monstrously ugly firelizard, Squirt. Seriously, that thing gives her the heebie-jeebies! An easy enough person to get along with, despite his being a (gasp!) boy and all.
Ryli: Ghost hunter extraordinaire! Also, quite the ambitious girl, which Klohi doesn't quite understand. They seem to have opposite views on life, but share a bit of obliviousness when it comes to certain aspects of it. Youthful energy that might inspire some, Klohi just thinks the girl is putting too much thought into the future. She is curious about those memoirs, though!
Cordelia: A know it all, and a stick-wielder. She can only really remember meeting this girl twice or so, and both weren't exactly great experiences. No actual contempt held for the girl, she's more or less wary of what Cordelia's company brings. She chased Klo while waving a stick around… a little caution is understandable.
Manxel: Another transformation. He must be magic, because Manxel has turned from being a thorn in her side into someone she actually enjoys talking to. It's a little strange for Klohi, since his hair sort of reminds her of her brother's, but the Weyrtanner is much nicer. Less overbearing. His scar unnerves her, while also calling to the girl's morbid curiosity. She knows how he got it, and that fact makes her panic just a bit more about walking onto the sands once again.
Loki: Yeeeaaaah. He gave her a flower once! But is that really worth the discomfort his company brings? And he has this habit of calling her “Klah”. Harmless, or so she hopes, but definitely touched in the head. No, not just touched. His whole head has been molested into insanity. …still kinda funny, she supposes.
U'rr: Madman. An absolute loony, no matter how many times weyrfolk tell her that dragon's won't pick the crazies. A crazy dragon would! …though she hasn't met his brown. U'rr just happens to be a very eloquent psychopath, is all. But then again, the target of his ire kind of deserved it, so Klohi's holding out the verdict on this one. He's also a terrible cook. Isn't that sad? Poor pychorider.
Don't let me get me!
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
With Klohi, what you see is what you get. She usually wears her emotions on her long, wavy sleeves whether it benefits her or not. Sure she attempts to hide what she's thinking at times, but she's not very good at it. The honesty isn't brutal, however, as she has tried to soften verbal blows in the past; but that still doesn't mean she thinks you look good in that hat. Maybe if you wore one that made your complexion less… red-fruit like?
I like that she's sensitive, without falling to pieces about every little thing. I guess the personality trait I like most is that she's emotional, rather than emo. (That's my opinion, of course!) And her energy. She is genuine, so getting excited and explaining rather loudly to everyone who'll listen about your dress is just how she lets you know she likes how you look in it. No filter on this one, really.
As for how to build on this? I think maybe just torturing more- I mean, roleplaying with more people is a good way to see if this 'honesty' has a limit. Not everyone reacts the same to Klohi, and some can find out that they rather dislike her lack of tact. Maybe she has to develop tact? What if it goes the other way, and she learns not to give a flying fig about people's feelings at all? We'll see!
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I like Klohi as she is, character-wise. But there's an aspect of her that could be developed further, and that's the fact that she's rather oblivious. Living a sheltered life means she's not exactly quick to pick up on things that seems obvious to others. Subtle hints? Forget about it- they go flying right over her head.
And don't even get me started on the 'Golds and the Bronzes'. Obliviousness turns to outright innocence when it comes to the topic of interpersonal relations.
Now this isn't an aspect that I DREAD roleplaying, in fact it's rather fun. But it's also something others might help Klohi with, through roleplay. She wants to live at the Weyr, despite how some situations make her uncomfortable… and talking to people who understand it a bit more would help. So, in summary… I love playing her currently, but character development is always a plus!
Weaver Extraordinaire…
With only the barest of womanly curves, Liadan could nearly pass for male if one looked past the slight curve of bust, feminine lips, and brow. She's tall and thin; a precarious balance of metablism and hard work conspiring to keep her svelte. Her auburn hair has a tendency to look touched by fire, especially in the warmer months. It has a bit of a wave to it and falls to somewhere about her shoulders, though is often caught up in a tie or tucked behind ears. Eyes are a green muddied by brown, turning them to something closer to hazel. A long, but narrow nose completes balanced features: evenly set in a square face.
A pale blue — nearer to grey than anything else — shirt falls just shortly past hips, laying over a long black skirt. Over this is a tunic of dark green with brown and pale blue embroidery, depicting vines, leaves, and flowers along all the edges. The under shirt has sleeves to the elbows, while the tunic lacks sleeves and boasts a deep neck to allow the clothing beneath to appear through. It also extends past the hips, contrasting neatly with the skirt. Liadan wears a pair of basic, well-worn boots upon her feet and a simple belt is slung about her waist. More for show and utility other than keeping clothing in place, it has a few pouches upon it. A long strip of hide is wrapped a few times about her throat, tied in a small bow at the back it holds upon it a few different small, varying charms. Simple bracelets of different shades and kinds of metal dangle about each of her slim wrists.
… turned candidate.
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?'
Liadan hails from Telgar Hold where she was a middle child, with six (or was it eight?) siblings to contend with for love and affection. Her parents were fairly unremarkable overall; your average hold denizens. Dani didn't lack for love or suffer for it, but she did have to learn fairly swiftly to fend for herself. Her mother wasn't always able to keep track of or tend to everyone, so the siblings had to work things out amongst themselves.
Once she was twelve Turns and old enough to apprentice, Liadan convinced her parents (not that it took much, with so many young to deal with) to allow her to go to Weaver. They became her family, though she's never really shown it much. Of her old family, Liadan did spend a few Turns trying to gain their attention still. Acting out- drinking, stealing, and other things that threatened her life in Weaver for a while. Every time, instead of her parents, it was her older brother who bailed her out and smoothed things over. Once she realized that her parents would never really care, she gave up and decided to pour herself into her new life. If asked about her childhood, Liadan won't have much to say about it either way. In many ways, it's as if her life didn't begin until she got to Weaver and was able to become her own person, rather than be identified by the mass of siblings she was often surrounded by. Of her blood family, her brother is the only one she truly cares about any longer.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Surprisingly (or not, depending on who you talk to), Liadan isn't really close to anyone. Her brother, who is back in Telgar, is the only one she'll open up to without any restraint. It's not an anti-social habit or that she's un-trusting of those she's met, but more that she doesn't know how. After a childhood of being one of many, she's spent so long focused on herself and being her own person that she kind of forgot about making close friends along the way. That's not to say she's not friendly with people, because she is. She gets along quite well with the rest of the Weaverhall and has begun to create tenuous friendships with people like Aruen.
Liadan can be a friendly person, she just hasn't yet fully grasped that ability to let people in. It's a learning experience!
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Her confidence, definitely. Sure, people may call it egotistical, but it's something that I, the player, can lack at times. Liadan knows what she's good at and she makes sure everyone else does as well. Sometimes she can be a little overconfident and struggle when she's out of her depth, but that same thing that got her into the situation can get her out. Liadan is all about looking good and not just by way of attire. I love that about her.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
As I said in question 2, Liadan just doesn't quite grasp the skills of friendship. I'd love to see her aloof, sometimes cranky and egotistical self learn how to be a better friend. And, wonderfully, this is something that only others can help her with. Primarily by being forgiving and willing to explain things that most people understand intrinsically.
Misc.
Liadan's "actress" is Julianne Nicholson.

So glad to have ya, Lisyana! Come on and spam us with your fabulous!
Spammy? Moi? I don't know /what/ you can possibly mean… so hold on to your hats!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~History of the (18?!?) Ages*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Lisyana is from Ista Hold. Once considered one of Lord Sterling's endless nieces and nephews (with both older and younger brothers), she is know acknowledged as being Lord Sterling's daughter (illegitimate), and current heir. Where once she was his personal messenger, often given permission to wander all of Pern with one of the duty dragonriders (as long as she had a message to deliver), lately she has been his wandering heir visiting old friends and family. Not only is bronzerider Q'luin her brother, but so too is brownrider E'siac - both as over protective as her newly found father. She has, in the last 4 turns, stood for both Ista and Fort Weyr Clutches, and counts riders among both groups as dear friends. And flowers must always be given to dear friends.
Coming to Ista for Isyth's Clutch was actually not expected. Gaining Lord Sterling's permission to Stand was even less expected. It took Q'luin making a bargain or two with their father to have it happen, and if she goes home she has duties to perform. However, this is an unexpected pleasure. At least she'll have a time with friends and no immediate pressure to assume duties. And even better! Nieces and Nephews! Maybe even…. TWINS!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ It's Not Who You Know…. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Family:
E'siac - Lisy's older brother, ex-apprentice Seacrafter, and brownrider. He's over protective, but given he has a wee one coming, he's been rather pre-occupied.
Sterling - Father and Lord Holder, Lisy's been dealing with him in a personal and professional manner since she was twelve. And even now that she's close to grown (if still too short for words), he has a special spot in her heart. How else would he have gotten her to even slightly agree to being Heir? He's already trying to match her off!
Q'luin - Oldest brother and bronzerider - the two may have not ended up close, but that has since changed without a doubt. The two are close, and there is little the two won't do for each other. Even their fights don't last long - and she often feels horrible if they even have one! He is over protective and controlling, but she is starting to get him to loosen up some. And he's make sure that there are plenty of family members shorter than her. Rock on! And another on the way. Clearly, he got what their sire lacked.
Friends:
J'rlen, Mika, Zerra - all three stood on Ista's Sands with Lisy her first time around. Dear friends, she doesn't get to visit as much as she used to, due to various conflicting duties.
Wyn - once Gwynne. The two did not start out as friends, but.. comrades in trouble. Since then, however, Lisy has grown to see the Weyrwoman as a dear friend, an adviser, someone to figure out clothes with, and someone to look up to. Clearly, the world is in danger.
I'deni - Bronzerider, new Weyrlingmaster. This was another who stood on the sands that first time. She's since kicked him in the shins too, among other things. Trouble together, trouble separate - trouble just describes these two to a tee. However, she's fond of him. Enough to get into arguments with beloved brothers. And him.
S'tao and Rh'iad - Weyrleader and dragonhealer. She's tried to poison one, and had the other stab her repeatedly with needles. Of course she's fond of them! Also, Rh'iad had her help with an injured dragon once. She tried looking into beast-healing after that, but it never truly took off.
Tia - Weyrsecond and another of Lisy's mentors. Just think! Her brothers asked she and Wyn look after Lisy. Isn't it fitting that they did so?
Candidates:
Alistair - she's actually semi-avoiding this one. His name makes her sad. But he's also from the Hold, so she's not really hiding from him.
Zhaifyn - he has no name! But he's handy with climbing and being tall.
Klohi - a sweetie, this one.
Niles - he's her inside source for all things trading. Also, immediately blamed for when Q'luin knows things He Should Not! However, he's still around after being kicked in the shins, so clearly, they are friends. Really.
Cordelia - scary, scary person. She and Sterling are never allowed to meet!
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*… But Who You Are *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Despite growing up, Lisy is still as energetic as she was when she was knee-high. The fact that she's still practically knee high is a source of humored annoyance. She views everything as a wonderful adventure that she can bedeck with flowers, or sing off-tuned about, but not everything is an adventure. Bad things can happen. Beliefs can be torn to shreds, then mended with love and affection. I love this fact about her, even though it makes her more than slightly shallow. In fact, slightly shallow may be slightly optimistic on the matter. While gaining some maturity will be a good thing, coming through rp will be the best way to go. And either way, I can't see having anything but the utmost fun with her.

All Things Manxel(tm) goes here!
All things Neiro!
Warmer climates has given this young man dusky olive tan, offsetting muscles of a lean athletic build. Standing just shy of six feet, his hair is balanced well between light cedar and dark chestnut and trimmed at a length where it brushes against the base of his neck. And over any collar. Meticulously maintained, there are strands that threaten to enter his line of vision unless slicked back against his head. Sculptured facial features, culminate with lips that achieve an appearance of neither full nor thin and a strong jawline devoid of stubble. Dark brown eyes are nearly a fine match to the hue of darker strands atop his head, nearly the color of klah. A solid and firm baritone voice rarely raised to a bellow unless required is the final mark of this man.
Candidate Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Technically, Niles was born in Keroon Sea Hold as the second child of five and the only male in a family of females. His only full blooded sister is older than himself while the rest are related to him by only his mother, Dani. Of note, his father, Jamin, was one of the many sons of the Keroon Sea Holder's family who didn't approve of the marriage between trader and holder. To this day, things are still strained to a degree.
Perhaps, it's more likely to ask where did Niles -not- grow up. As part and parcel of being a trader, he has seen a lot of the northern continent and some of the south. The wandering life has been a part of his blood for Turns until his adolescent years changed that through conflicts with his stepfather. Until then, he was a good child who remembers a great deal of his father who found it necessary to instruct his son with basic education. If not through him then his family members who had connections through the Harpers. Yet, all work and no play makes a dull child. Childish mischief in moderation did abound until the death of his father when he was younger than ten turns of age.
After that point in his life, Niles became more acutely aware of a necessity to watch out for his mother and sister. A sense of placed responsibility where there were scores of uncles and aunts to assist, it wasn't until her remarriage that the young man became quiet and prone to conflicts with his stepfather. Needless to say, the desire to break away from the trading family grew stronger as he got older by whatever excuses possible.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
One would think that Niles would have some -one- as a trusted confidante or many. That's decidedly not the case. For all of being a trader, Niles would only count a few as being close enough to hear his concerns if they were to be voiced. Interestingly enough, they're all riders - if you don't count family. Namely, a particular healer and cousin at Fort Weyr (Saphia). Beside that, who is he close to, you ask? Soteria, Tia and even Wyn. An odd trio of women but like all good things, there's a lively history there. As far as family is concerned, it's.. difficult. Some members, he gets along with like his mother and sisters. To some degree, that extends to their husbands except his mother's husband, his stepfather. In that aspect, it's best not to even acknowledge the familial relationship among other members on both sides of the family. There are some members of the family on his father's side that do treat Niles kindly regardless of what they think of his mother.
Likely drinking buddies? Ah, that's where it would get interesting and split down the middle between E'siac and oddly Q'luin.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
What I like most about Niles is that charm of his, the ability to go out and just strike up a conversation when it particularly involves business. When it's not, he tends to stick his foot into his mouth in a typical guy fashion sometimes. I don't know if that's a trait that should change as it causes so much fun to be had. Changes? Well, it might be nice to see that change. I'm certainly game to see if it happens!
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
Somewhere, under the surface, it's there. Niles has a loner streak or something quite similar. Being told that his efforts are appreciated clearly sets off a resulting feeling of uncomfortableness that might result in a period of staying under the radar. As if he's not used to being thanked for things that are expected in some way. A duty, if you will. Even if things he does are kindly meant and should be taken as such.

Who is Ryli?
Quite a height for a young woman, Ryli is, brushing 5'9. Tall and long and lean, svelte lines and lissome limbs collaborate to present a slim blonde vision: her curves are slim, while light muscle conspires just enough to keep her from looking rangy. Though given to loose clothing, when skin is shown it is generously peppered with freckles on pale-milk canvas: and when displayed on her face, they pop with rampant glee on sun-kissed cheekbones and straight nose. Her hair is as fair as her skin, and moreso: a shade warmer than milk, pristine blonde falls to her shoulders, cut in brief layers to flutter about her collarbone. Cool features are measured and eloquently balanced, displaying an elegant beauty which carresses a pixie's jaw and those prettily freckled cheekbones. Blue eyes are her most striking asset, and they dance with emotion when need be: a pale slate-sky in color, almond shape canted ever so slightly upwards.
In testament to fall, Ryli is wearing a loose, long-sleeved, light blue dress with a darker blue sash that emphasizes her slim waist. The skirt ends about mid-calf and is loose enough to have a decided *swish-swish* to it. On her feet are strappy sandals the color of dark sandalwood.
Ryli is… Well, Ryli just is. To some, she might be loony. To others, she might be charming. To others, still, she might be just another ordinary girl with a pretty face that lives in a weyr. She's bound and determined not to end her life in anonymity. Thus, she is working on her memoir, decided one day on a whimsy. This girl is part whimsy, part grounded level-headedness, enough curiosity to keep Tyrar on the verge of a heart-attack, and enough naivete to land her in embarrassing situations. She's not graceful, for all her graceful lines, usually she ends up stumbling, falling, or tripping her way through life.
In general, when she is not busy with chores and such, she can be found either working on her memoir or at the beach. She holds a special love for Istan's pretty beaches! And it is not hard to lure her into mischief, not with the promise of curiosities!
Anything else… can be found out during RP!
Candidate Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Ryli is from Bitra Hold, younger sister to Tyrar, whose father is heavily into runners and whose mother is a healer. With permission from her mother and father, she's come to Ista to be closer to her big brother — who she /adores/. Idolizes even. She's encouraged by her parents to leave Bitra because of the rough nature of the Hold and the lack of big brothers to look after her. Ryli is a little too gullible, a little too klutzy, and a little too curious for her own good. Ista Weyr was chosen to be near enough to Tyrar, but far enough away to ensure she learns to stand on her own two feet. She is familiar with runners, being Daddy's little girl. Familiar enough with them to work in the stables, at least.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Ryli is extremely close to her brothers, Tyrar and Tryslan. Tyrar is a bit over-protective (just a bit!) and she tends to view him as a stifler of fun. Klohi is a recent acquaintance, and all the more exciting because she seems to be of about the same age as Ryli! Q'luin is an enigma, and one that seems to only be encountered in the dark of night, but there are always curiosities when they do meet.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I really like two things about Ryli: Her drive to be something more and her embarrassing habit of tripping and falling. She wants to be more than this life offers, to be something worthy of her memoir. So that when her life is done, there is something tangible left behind that people will want to read. In that sense, I guess I like her fear the best; the fear of having wasted her life and at the end of it, having nothing left to show. It's something that, as humans, we all wonder and drive towards a purpose in our lives. Ryli is no different, she just wants that purpose to be something everyone will remember. Or at the very least, make her memoir popular.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I really wouldn't change anything. Ryli is as Ryli does and her growth is wholly dependent upon her experiences in life. I'd rather be surprised with the organic flow of RP in how she develops than work towards a specific trait change.

Willowy, gangly, coltish and cute; Syvriella has yet to find womanly rondure, but this does not detract from her overall appeal. Angular features display a sprinkling of sun-kissed freckles, over straight nose and sloping cheekbones; brown eyes the deepest color of fresh-brewed klah; and a narrow chin, all of which add up to a rather elfin appeal to this diminutive girl's features. Brown hair falls straight and true just past her narrow shoulders, a shade or two lighter than her eyes and fine as well-combed sisal… when not tangled into a perpetual knot by brisk Istan winds. Standing at just a hair over 5'2, it would be easy to mistake this teenager as younger than she actually is, given her height and slim stature.
What Syvriella wears tells a lot of what she does as a living. Dark brown shorts that occasionally have a smudge of dirt from working around plants, ending mid-thigh. Her sleeveless shirt is of an airy material to keep her cool in the strong Istan heat, though the light blue fabric has been speckled with a few spots of redwort… or what one hopes is redwort. With sandals her outfit is completed, slapping against her bare feet.
Syvriella is 16 Turns, 11 months, and 13 days old.
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Born and raised in Fort Hold, Syvriella's got quite a solid background strict to Hold and Craft life. Both of her parents are Harpers and she is the last to be born, breaking her mother's streak in birthing boys. With four older brothers, being protected by them was inevitable. As they grew up together the task was handed down from the eldest to the youngest of the brothers as the older ones eventually headed off to deal with their own crafts. That did not stop them from keeping an eye on her, however, as they continued their studies at home to be with their family and friends.
Eventually even Syv grew to have interests other than in Harpercraft like her brothers, but hers had been in the Herb gardens of Fort Hold. She spent all her time there and eventually took an apprenticeship with the Healers. And that interest finally took her to Ista, though she'll agree that it was more to get away from her clingy family. Her childhood back home had the usual things, learning respect and manners from her parents… reluctantly. Getting punished for being too rowdy with the other Hold kids. And most of all learning to throw a good punch from her brothers. They insisted.

Syv takes awhile to open up to people. Being completely new to Ista Island, without knowing anyone personally, she is not close to anyone presently. Her family, however, keeps in touch with her constantly. She is closer to her two younger brothers than the elder too, as they are closer in age to her. She admires her parents for what they do and who they are, and has been close to them and loves them like any of her family… but she still disagrees with them often enough.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Syvriella will not back down from a challenge. This is something that I have yet to really play much, but if a problem ever arises she will lose sleep on fixing it. With candidacy I hope that many problems will arise for her to have to learn to deal with, from getting along with people she doesn't really like to figuring out how to sew a candidate robe. I do hope that she'll develop into it by finding more obstacles, character changing obstacles, but we'll see. I'm all for going with the flow and not forcing any changes. My characters hate me if I do that. :) She is also very loyal to her family and friends, as much as she might nag about them, and still something I'd like to play as she hasn't made any friends in candidacy yet. So far it remains all NPCs.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I think there hasn't been enough character development to find anything I really want to change. What I would like to see is her opening up more ICly to those around her, but that requires a lot of RP on my part and getting into the candidacy. :) Just time and patience and she'll learn to fit into her strange new surroundings.
Tryslan - In progress
Description
A slender reed Tryslan isn't, even though at first blush one would be forgiven for thinking such. Standing about average, this young man still seems nigh-ethereal with every inch of his 5'8 frame highlighting sleek swimmer's muscle. Fair skin is given to freckles, wherever t'is displayed; most particularly, they highlight facial features with sunkissed splendor. Blonde hair is artfully mussed, a shaggy length given to natural waves and curling about ears, mostly obscuring them from view. Narrow-built face is given to memorable features: high cheekbones made prominent by the hollows below, a lovely cupid's-bow mouth, bold chin and strong jaw-line balancing a broad nose. His eyes, a color just this side of swampwater, are murky green and settled well under dark-blonde eyebrows.
Tryslan is clothed in a way that could be considered out of his means. Stylishly cut dark slacks are well-tailored enough and they match the form fitted vest he wears over an off white button down. The shirt's sleeves are open and rolled to his elbows, the top buttons undone and showing off the pendent of the gold chain he wears; a small, stylized mark with dice carved into the face instead of any craft that actually makes marks.
Personality
Under construction.
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Born and raised in Bitra Hold, Tryslan is the youngest of four siblings. Between a father into runners, Tirarys, and a mother into healing, Rylene, it was more or less figured that Trys would lean one way or the other and follow in someone's footsteps. Healing was a no go but for awhile the boy did find himself a place in the stables. Or rather, on the racetrack. He jockeyed for his father's runners on more than one occasion and he even rode to wins on quite of few of them but it wasn't the runners Trys was interested in. It was the winning.
As soon as the big boys had let him sit at a table, even before the runners, Tryslan was a gambler. Of course he wasn't always very good. He was just humored in the earliest turns, but eventually he became a decent, sometimes even respected, player. Gambling became a way of life for him. When he wasn't riding or doing chores in between, he was finding some other way to take chances. Maybe it was being the baby of the family that urged on his rebellious nature.
When his older sister Ryli left Bitra to move closer to their older brother Tyrar in Ista territory, Tryslan wasn't happy to get left behind. So he followed her.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Trys is closest to his siblings, though Ryli moreso than Tyrar even though it's Tyrar that knows things about him that he tries to keep from Ryli's innocent, uh, ness.
He's still new enough to the Weyr that he doesn't have anyone other than them that he's particularly close to. It's only a matter of time!
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
I think the thing that I like most about Tryslan is that he's not afraid of doing things. He's still at a point in his life where he's convinced he's impervious to harm, but in the end I think he might just be one of those 'live like you're dying' sorts of people.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
At this point, there's not anything in particular that I'd change about Trys. The way I play, I don't tend to plan much out ahead of time and I prefer to just go with the flow of what happens through RP and vigs. If he changes, great! If he doesn't, also great!
1) Tell us aboutyour character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
Tyrar was born at Bitra Hold, to a racer manager and his Healer wife. A certain aptitude for Smithing was cultivated when found combined with interest in the craft, and Tyrar was sent off to learn at the main Smithhall at the wee young age of 12.
He kept in close contact with his family throughout his apprenticeship, which was rocky enough due to his difficulties in anything that involves letters. Tutoring and extra Harper classes helped bring him up along with the rest of his class, and he walked the tables at a respectably young age: twenty-two.
With his new knot a posting was given— Tyrar was to go to Ista Hold. The metalsmith was working at settling in when his life was disrupted by a series of events: the arrival of his younger sister, then younger brother… and then, one late Istan night, a request to Stand for Ista's clutches.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
RYLI: His sister, who is unfortunately beautiful. She keeps him at the constant risk of having cardiac arrest from worrying over her virtue.
::
TRYSLAN: His brother, for all appearances a layabout gambler but a rather splendidly gifted jockey. Ty admittedly doesn't know how to handle his brother most of the time.
::
Q'LUIN: Ty would consider the dragonhealer a friend, a brother-in-arms against those who would impigne upon respective sister's virtues.
::
WYN: Not enough words to describe the complicated knotted combination of emotions that Tyrar has for the weyrwoman. Perhaps someday he'll unravel the knot and figure it out.
::
AVARRA: Tyrar has a habit of running into the greenrider more often than not, in the weirdest places. If he ever comes in with a black eye, she's probably to blame.
::
CORDELIA: A bemusing girl, if only because she's so easily baited by Q'luin. Tyrar's still waiting to see if he's going to die because he shielded her from Tia.
::
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
There are several key elements of Tyrar that are so intertwined that it's hard to pick just one! He is loyal, devoted, and his sense of duty and perception of priorities may be slightly skewed away from what would be considered "the norm". His blood remains first and foremost his priority in life. He's loosely based on the motif of a lion-in-sunlight, sleepy and bemused, satiated by a recent kill, with edges of bright fire for his passion regarding protecting his family and his anger at injustice. I'm not entirely sure where he's "going", or how things will build with his character— he's almost to the point of playing himself, already. ;P
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I suppose I have a rough time answering this because a) Tyrar is a relatively new character and b) if I don't like something, I fix it. There's no fun in playing a character that you find yourself unhappy with. I /would/ like to see Ty season and mature and grow further than he is, and wild crazy random RP is the perfect thing to get him there, so that would be it, I imagine! ;)

My undertaking is not difficult, essentially… I should only have to be immortal to carry it out. - Jose Luis Borges
Valentin is a sculptor, the son of a sculptor. His parents separated when he was very young and, at the age of seven, when his mother remarried, his father came and took him away to join in what he called 'the family work'. His father made a generally good living catering to the vanity of the well-off, but what he valued were the great virtues: Truth. Beauty. Art. Those things as expressed in clay and stone and plaster and bronze.
Eventually, he came to know the work as well as his father, and he took his leave with his share of their last joint commission and went south to find his own way in the world.
Valentin
It's not really possible to tell at a glance whether the hue of Valentin's skin is primarily from the sun or a nature olive complexion, but if indeed it is the sun, none of it has lightened his short black hair. Thin lips, square jaw, cleft chin; it would be easy to imagine him looking severe, but yet somehow his expression leans towards the sort of smile that shows easily in dark eyes. He hasn't quite developed the heft of later adulthood, but at about six feet tall and broad-shouldered, he's a long way from the slim build of early adolescence. He shaves on an entirely irregular basis; some days there's not so much as a hint of a shadow, others it seems less of a priority.

Valentin is an artist first and foremost. Even now, he spends most of his so-called free time working. He's occasionally willing to take small commissions, but for the most part, what he does now is for his own sake, not for marks; smaller pieces in clay, plaster casting, occasionally hours spent on the beach at low tide turning wet sand into a transitory masterpiece. He does not take well to being interrupted at this work, but flattery will get you everywhere.
He has a somewhat unnerving habit of staring and, occasionally, actually asking people to move in a particular way. It's not lecherous. It's aesthetic. And it's as likely to be directed towards a massive middle-aged woman in the kitchens as to an attractive adolescent.
Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
He may have some half-siblings, but he doesn't know them, nor does he have a relationship with his mother. His early childhood was unremarkable and the rest of his life since has been spent with his father; see above.
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
He isn't the sort of person who does 'close' very well. He's spent most of his life with only one constant person in his life, and that someone who was not very communicative. Now that he's gone out on his own, friendship has not yet become a particular priority for him. He's not necessarily standoffish; he just doesn't have any particular attachments.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Clearly, his work is extremely important to him. How he is able to continue that with the new life he has for some reason chosen is central to his current story.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
I really prefer character development to be organic, an expression of where the roleplay goes, not any particular intention of change on my part.
Don't Set Sail on Someone Else's Star
At just shy of six feet tall with a lean build, black hair just a little lightened and reddened by the Istan sun, dark eyes, and a dimpled smile, he's definitely been lucky with his looks. The term 'tall, dark, and handsome' has probably been applied to him at least once in his life. With that said, he's not actually got those perfectly classic facial features: his nose is broad and a little large, eyes set wide beneath heavy brows, lips full but not finely shaped. Still, with his dark complexion, fine hair, and serious eyes, there's no denying he's far from unattractive.
He dresses rather well, all things considered, preferring dark colors— deep teal paired with charcoal, cobalt with black, wine red with dark brown, colors but not flashy ones. Generally speaking, his clothes are lightweight fabrics that breathe easily in the tropics, often canvas or khaki for trousers, barefoot or sandals, only rarely going as far as shoes or boots.
Zhaifyn is 21 Turns, 5 months, and 16 days old.
You can read the complete history here: http://zhaifyn.livejournal.com/profile
The short version: Zhaifyn is a new face to Ista Weyr, having been officially (?) searched on day 16, month 10 by I'deni. The rumor goes that he turned up in the barracks sporting a busted lip, which he answered for with a vague, "Isn't that normal for search?" He doesn't seem to be a big fan of introductions, often forgetting or omitting to supply his name - sometimes even when specifically asked - though he is forthright in admitting that he was a sailor from Ista Hold, with a lot of his time spent at Tillek as an apprentice. He's handsome (aware of it), flirtatious (unashamed of it), and drinks (or did, anyway).
Candidate Questions
1) Tell us about your character's background. Where did they grow up? What was their childhood like? Do they have siblings? Lots of extended family?
I am so lazy, that I'll just link to it again: http://zhaifyn.livejournal.com/profile
2) Who is your character close to now? Fellow crafters, residents, lots of people, or a few in particular?
Nowadays, if Zhaifyn was classifying people to whom he's close and people to whom he's just kinda acquainted…
His mother, father, and first brother all live at Ista Hold still, and he's close to the lot of them. His brother and his brother's wife are kind of the "what might have been," in his mind: had he walked the tables, gotten married, and settled down, that would have been his life. He doesn't keep a great many close friends, though there are still the "boys" he's known most of his life. And the "girls" he's either known long enough that he wouldn't dare touch them, and the ones about whom he has no such reservations.
3) What personality trait or background element do you like most about your character? How would you like to build on that?
Zhaifyn's got a great sense of fluidity, an ability to just… go along with things. Considering that he's got something of a temper and a tendency to put himself in the way of trouble, this ability to remain unfettered is utterly necessary to avoid having him get lynched.
Putting him into positions and scenes like the final "search" scene with I'deni was an awesome way to explore that - yes, the kid can knuckle up and he has no qualms about it, but, even after getting popped in the mouth, he isn't exactly holding a grudge. Eventually, I'll be interested in finding the things about which he's not willing to budge, the things that will actually make him dig in, but - for now - I like the idea that he's able to go with the flow.
4) What would you change about your character if you could? How might others help you do this?
Right now, I'm actually pretty happy with where Zhaifyn's at. I do think he has an ability to avoid getting close to people, whether it's by ducking questions or ignoring them or however it is he's pulling it off. People are picking up on this, bless their hearts, so I think this is something that will evolve on its own as more RP transpires.
